What is Botox ® Cosmetic and How does it work?

Botox ® Cosmetic is a purified botulinum toxin that has been FDA approved for the treatment of moderate to severe frown lines between the brows. Low doses of Botox ® Cosmetic are injected by a very fine tip needle into the muscles that cause frowning. Botox ® Cosmetic works within the neurotransmitters to prevent the muscles to contract. Within 1 week, the region of treatment will become relaxed preventing strong muscles to create the skin fold that normally appears as a fine line or wrinkle. This localized treatment will not affect ones expression but, will give a more relaxed and smooth appearance. Lines that are deeper and more visible at rest are usually treated with Juvederm; an injectable gel.

Who are candidates for Botox ® Cosmetic?

Both men and women are candidates for this treatment. The common age for individuals to receive treatment; are ages 21 to 65.

How Should I Prepare to Received Such a Treatment?

It is recommended to avoid, any chemical peels or laser treatments at least 1 week prior to treatment. Avoid taking any oral supplements such as Vitamin E or Fish Oils to help prevent bruising. Medications such as St. John’s Wort, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Aspirin, Aleve, Excedrin, and other anti-inflammatory medications should be avoided at least 2 days prior to treatment to minimize bleeding and bruising.

Does this hurt?

With any small injection, you may feel some discomfort however, to minimize such pain a topical aesthetic will be applied at your discretion.

How long does the process take?

Approximately 20 minutes.

What Side Effects are Most Common?

Localized tenderness at the site of injection, minimal to no inflammation, and bruising may be associated with the injection. Although bruising rarely occurs, it is recommended to schedule your appointment at least 2 weeks prior to a special engagement, in the event that bruising does occur.

Who is not a candidate for Botox ® Cosmetic?

Anyone who has a neuromuscular disorder such as ALS, Myasthenia Gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome is not a recommended candidate for Botox ® Cosmetic. Individuals who have an autoimmune disease, pregnant or nursing women should not receive treatment. Patients with diabetes, an unknown heart condition, or a history of myocardial infarction are discouraged from receiving Botox ® Cosmetic.

It is not recommended for those who have an autoimmune disease or uncontrolled diabetes. If you have diabetes and it is controlled a letter from your private physician stating that 1) your diabetes is controlled and 2) “it is ok to receive dermal filler treatment” must be specified on the letter before receiving such a procedure at Rejuvenating Skin Care 3) your private physician’s signature must be present.

What Should I Avoid After the Treatment?

The day of and after treatment it is recommended to avoid touching the area, and applying face makeup to post treated region. Wash your hands before touching or cleansing face to help prevent infection.

How long does the effect of Botox ® Cosmetic last?

Your individual results may vary. The average result last up to 3 months. To maintain effects, a 3 month return treatment is recommended.

How much does Botox ® Cosmetic Cost?

The average cost is $12/unit. However, an individualized consultation needs to be performed in order to give an accurate quote. Every individual is unique. One may have more fine lines than the next individual. If more regions are purchased, a combination price can be given by the licensed Nurse Practitioner or healthcare Professional performing the treatment.

How about those facilities offering $7 per unit?

This is usually a marketing strategy to get you in the door. You do not want to bargain with Botox ® Cosmetic. The lower the price the more likelihood of an overly diluted product.

Does generic botox work the same?

You do not want generic botox. The unknown side effects can be detrimental to your health. We only use the FDA-approved Botox ® Cosmetic by Allergan, Inc. The vial used should have the “Allergan” hologram.
